Good to know
- Sales tax: shelf prices exclude tax; a few percent are added at the register depending on the location. Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax. In Canada, GST/HST is added.
- Customs: returning to the EU by air, goods up to €430 are duty-free. Declare anything above that in the red channel – keep your receipts.
- Best time: the biggest discounts come around Black Friday (the Friday after Thanksgiving, late November) and in January; weekday mornings are quietest.
- Sizes: clothing and shoe sizes differ from Europe – try things on when in doubt.
- Baggage: check your airline’s allowance beforehand and pack a foldable bag rather than paying extra at the airport.
